Introduction

Understanding why you do what you do is not a matter of luck or genius; it is a discipline that can be learned and applied by anyone, anywhere. This process is about discovering the deep-seated purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to act and provides the foundation for all your decisions. When you articulate this core belief, you unlock the ability to inspire others and create lasting fulfillment in your work and life.

The Golden Circle: Clarity, Discipline, and Consistency

The Golden Circle provides a framework for understanding how inspirational leaders and organizations communicate and operate. Most people and companies start with the "What" (what they do) and sometimes move to the "How" (how they do it), but very few start with the "Why" (the purpose). Starting with Why—the core belief—allows you to communicate directly to the part of the brain that controls behavior and trust. Clarity of Why provides the direction, discipline of How provides the structure, and consistency of What provides the tangible proof. "If you don't know why you do what you do, and people don't know why they should care, then how are you ever going to get them to follow you?"

Finding Your Why: The Looking Glass Test

Discovering your organizational or personal Why is not an invention; it is a discovery process. For individuals, this involves reflecting on your past experiences, identifying key stories, and recognizing patterns where you felt most fulfilled and authentic. These stories reveal the contributions you naturally make and the impact you have on others. For groups, the process requires gathering key stakeholders and sharing defining stories about the organization's history, focusing on moments of genuine pride and success. The final Why statement must pass the Looking Glass Test: it must be accurate (reflecting the past), simple, clear, and actionable (providing a guide for the future).

Crafting Your Why Statement

A powerful Why statement is always composed of two parts: the contribution and the impact. It should follow the format: "To [CONTRIBUTION] so that [IMPACT]." The contribution describes the action you take or the value you provide, while the impact describes the resulting change or feeling others experience because of that contribution. For example, "To challenge the status quo so that people are inspired to do the things that inspire them." This statement is timeless and provides a filter for all future decisions. If a new opportunity or product does not align with the impact you seek to create, it should be avoided. "People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it."

The Hows: Values in Action

Once the Why is established, the Hows provide the necessary guidance for living out that purpose daily. The Hows are the specific actions, behaviors, and principles that define your culture and ensure you stay true to your Why. They are your operating values. These are not aspirational adjectives like "integrity" or "excellence," but actionable adverbs or phrases that describe how you operate. For example, if your Why is about inspiring creativity, your Hows might include "Always ask 'What if?'" or "Listen to the quietest voice in the room." These actions must be practiced consistently to build trust and demonstrate authenticity. "The goal is not to simply attract people who need what you have; the goal is to attract people who believe what you believe."

Final Summary

Discovering your core purpose provides an essential compass for navigating complex decisions and achieving long-term fulfillment. By articulating your Why, you move beyond merely describing what you do and begin communicating the deep belief that drives your behavior, inspiring loyalty and trust in the process. This clarity of purpose ensures that all actions, products, and communications consistently reinforce the impact you seek to make in the world.
